CotR Fellowship Spotlight: Ride to Gondor!

Mounts are awesome!

Yes, I’ve been on an Elfhelm kick lately, and this week my delve has taken me to a wonderfully synergistic fellowship with Elfhelm at the center of it all. There is far more to it than that though, and the Rohan fans out there will be especially tickled.

Join us today, as CoTR shines a spotlight on…

First off, check out those deck titles! Now that we’ve got the blood pumping, let’s ride!

Here’s what caused me to fall in love with the Ride to Gondor! fellowship:

1) It is accessible: The entire fellowship can be created from a single LoTR-LCG collection with a single core set.

2) Each deck is mono-sphere: This opens up a plethora of specialized cards, and Herumen takes full advantage of it: He includes the record attachments, Knight of Minas Tirith, Pelergir Shipwright, Reinforcements, Strength of Arms, and each deck contains a White Tower Watchman; and, as a side-benefit… suck it Master’s Malice!

3) This fellowship maximizes global effects, and there are a lot of them: For starters, eight of the nine heroes are slated to benefit from Elfhelm’s bonus. Second, excluding the all-powerful Gandalf, all characters have either the Gondor or Rohan traits. The shear number of targets means that plays such as Charge of the Rohirrim, For Gondor!, or Astonishing Speed always make an impact, especially if Mutual Accord is played beforehand.

4) All of the major bases are covered: Willpower, attack, and defense are big, but there is also a fair amount of cancellation, resource acceleration/smoothing, and action advantage. It’s a little weak on card draw, and there is no healing to speak of, but the fellowship is otherwise solid.

5) Read the deck descriptions. Those are fantastic write-ups, and not all of the strategies are intuitive from just looking at the deck list.

If you are ever in the position to build a fellowship beforehand, consider giving Ride to Gondor! a try. Just note that none of these decks are meant to be played by themselves: Each deck is a cog in the whole machine, from the focus on trait-based global boosts, to the way attachments are meant to be played across the table, and how each deck covers for the weaknesses of the others.

The last thing I will mention is that there is room for growth; afterall, there is still one sphere left unaccounted for, right? Sure, Lore heroes can’t benefit from Elfhelm’s sphere-ism, but there are a lot of lore Gondor and Rohan characters that would slot nicely into the framework that the rest of the fellowship brings.

Enjoy the ride!

  1. Thanks for featuring my fellowship! I love thematic decks/fellowships, and this one came together surprisingly well. Especially as it was the first fellowship I ever made and my first posting on RingsDB. As such, it could probably use some refining. Constructive comments are always welcome. Thanks again!

  2. Cool idea. The 4th Mono Lore deck would surely have to be almost entirely Gondor if you didn’t want to break the Gondor/Rohan theme. A House of Healing/Gondor Ranger/Trap deck could work.
